I personally like Verdash, but I doubt it's the best for the job. It was just the easiest for me to breed good worker passives into. Still a very solid pick since they have good planting, harvesting, and transporting.

Verdash and Petallia are who I am liking as the planter combo. Both are solid picks that don't seem to get stuck too often being medium in size and can offer other assistance in their down time. Verdash is also a runner, so he gets stuff done fast as he zooms around. And actually he has his feet on the ground meaning he also avoids the flying or floater issues of being stuck 10x more often.

I'm currently using Gobfin and any of the tier 1 waters as a partner for him. I was using two of the Tier 1's and they were doing fine, but Gobfin is a step up from them while still being a little guy. Most of the better water pals are annoying whether they eat like crazy, float and get stuck on literally everything, or they are huge and get stuck. Then you also got Azurobe with her annoying movement noises.

To be fair though, my farm is in my main base where the other form of production is crafting, so none of my guys get distracted by the wood/stone pits. I don't really care for the noise of them and do wonder why so many of the "X pal isn't great cause they get distracted mining or chopping" people are that dependent on those pits being mixed in the same base with their crafting/farming/etc.

gobfins r way too slow at watering imo, just catch gyarados or use azurobe if you really an early waterer but gyarados is so much better.

how slow? as slow as baking a cake lol

My favourites so far are penking or Gobfin for water, and Petalia or Vaelet for planting/harvesting. Better pals tend to be bigger and get stuck more. It takes more food that way, but I can generally out-produce the food needs with 2 penkings, 1 gobfin, and 3 petalias. 2 tomato plots, 2 lettuce plots, and 2 berry plots.

Also really helps if they have the artisan, workaholic, or serious traits.
i have found probably the best way to produce insane amount of berries and not have pathing issues(rarely) at all

step 1: build 40 berries plot on the 2nd floor
step 2: remove the stairs from 1st floor to the 2nd or any route they can path find to 2nd stairs..you do not want them to path find
step 3: have at least 2 flopie with gloves
step 4 : deploy ton of petalia or lyleen + 4 azrobe (jormuntide still sucks cause they somehow get stuck at first floor)
they will wirelessly connect to the farm plot from meters away and since pathing dont exist they will pretty much work at their best capacity since they dont have to pick up items or move around
step 5 : afk on the 2nd floor berries farm with flopie out collecting items for you ..you are pretty much the item collector from minecraft extra utility mod

best to mainly only have 1 kind of crops to simplifies production
i choose to have 1 base for wheat 1 for berries and another for tomato and only farm them when i need em(if i want ore i only have anubis and anubis only)

You don't need very skillful Pals to farm more food than you'll ever eat.

If you go the salad route it´s actually important to have at least one Pal with 3/3 seeding/harvesting. That frees a Pal in your base to do other things.

But yes, you can go the berry/wheat route and never really have to worry, as you wrote, food is plenty as it is.

penking also works as a smaller watering guy, as he will prioritise watering over other tasks.
My penking will do just about anything other than watering. he will even go mine over water based jobs. its frustrating af

I've noticed that Penking will prefer mining if the mining node is closer, but go water is a workstation/field that needs water is closer. So imo keep the fields + mill close to the feed box, and put the mining station farther away.
