Pals and dedicated servers
Just had a question about how dedicated servers interact with pals. I have my own dedicated server that is up 24 hours a day. I have set up a base and I’m trying to get my pals to work on lumbering and mining stone when I am gone. It seems like they’ll do this for a little bit when I’m gone, but then they’ll get depressed. I have built enough beds, a hot tub and they have plenty of food, as as well. Is there something I’m missing to keep them from being depressed? Is it just the state of the e game right now?

are you cooking their food?
Dont take my word for it but when there are no players in server the pals seem to be stuck in place and they slowly lower sanity or starve out its same for our server as well after longer time they are depresed or weak and any other issues.
But do try make some better food some that give sanity berrys are are useless.

I’m not cooking their food. My base is in the very beginning stages, so I don’t have many options other than berries. I will try to give them access to better foods and see if that helps their sanity levels. I also have my server settings to have my character stay after I log out, but I don’t know if that matters or not?

The current theory that seems most plausible (to me at least) is that without an active player in the area the server is unloading the zone to save on memory BUT it is still tracking the pals timer as if the area was active. Which means they still get hungry/tired but since the pals aren't actually active to offset the increasing negative effects they just stack up until they are assigned penalties. Which would also cover why they gather some resources but then seem to stop, because the area was unloaded.

I was wondering what foods I should focus on making in terms of lowing their sanity that I can mass produce easily?

even just baked berries restore a bit of sanity. and having at least 1 hot tub per 5 pals can help. especially if you have nocturnal pals as they will not use their beds, so they regain sanity purely by food and hot tubs (at least as far as I can tell)

I was exploring the game settings and found one that I think keeps the players body persistent even when logged off. It seemed an odd setting but then I thought, like ark, the player's body being retained on log off would keep that area loaded.

So maybe turn this setting on, log off in base and see if your body acts as kind of a "chunk loader" (minecraft term) to keep the area actually running.

I will take that into account and I will try baking all the berries I have and see if that helps! I’ll try other foods that restore sanity, too. Thanks for the advice!

I actually have that setting on. I noticed that when I come back to the game, time does pass and they do eat, but their sanity lowers a ton. It could just be the food, but
VolOpt mentioned that it could be a memory issue and it could be just tracking their timers, rather than the tasks that they’re assigned to do. I’m going to experiment this weekend and find out. It’ll be interesting to know one way or the other.

I have pancakes on my main base, that lower san drain, and cotton candy on my mining base produced by Woolipops. Don't bother farming the milk for the pancakes, farm a bunch of berries, cook them, sell them to a merch and buy milk with the money. It is actually more efficient than farming with cows. The great thing about the cotton candy is the low amount of hunger it satisfies, while also giving 5 san. The pals eat so much cotton candy that they don't really need to sleep to replenish their san. I supplement the cotton candy with cooked eggs because it occasioanaly runs out. Condensing the farming pals once also improves efficiency without much investment

best thing i can say is make salads in one food basket with rest of slots filled with non perishables. 1 basket. 3 San pools i use 4 and 2 of the tropical ones. Open floor plan as space every thing 1 tile away or have one of something facing the opposite direction. If you use multiple floors pals require tile space to move. Small-1x1T, Med-1x2T, Large-2x3T. Pal Box can be built indoors but requires a 4x4T space once down can get away with 3x3T. Pals on server restart with pile on palbox. Other then that they will still get depressed just not every time you login.

Thank you guys so much for the advice! I’ll try and make a better layout for my base and try giving my pals the correct foods for their hunger and sanity. It sounds like it might be best to combine both your ideas to make sure they have non perishable food and it’s in close proximity to where they’re working. I’ll try and come up with a layout that makes sense. I have my base in Autumn Hills in the area where there’s an open area on top, and then a lower section with a whole bunch of places to mine ore (I think it’s southwest of a giant bridge?). Is there a better site for a more open mining base where I can easily feed my pals, or is this location feasible?

If they're getting depressed you do not have

enough beds
hotspring(s)
or you have set your pals to work to hard with the observation thing.

How many pals are on your base>

I do have enough beds, and I think I have enough hot springs. I have 1 hot spring and only 5 pals at my base. However, I do not have an observation deck. I’ll put one at my base and see if that helps. Thanks!

You will try everything said here and the problem will persist. Its a Bug and everyone that not experienced it yet will tell that's a food problem.
