PC Shut Down HELP!
I've recently been having an issue where playing the game for a bit causes my entire PC to shut down. I initially thought this was due to overheating, but I monitored my temps and hardware yesterday and everything seemed fine when my PC shut down. Has anyone else run into this or maybe have a fix?

system info:
OS: Linux Mint 21.2
CPU: Ryzen 5 2600
GPU: 3060
32gb RAM

With limited information all I can say is I had a similar issue in.. 2009? The cause ended up being my PSU starting to fail. I could have the PC on 24/7 just browsing the internet, but after 20 minutes of playing a game my system would restart itself. Basically, only when drawing an increased amount of power did the problem present itself.

In truth, though, this could be a number of things.

Linux user here. That is not an Linux issue, but a hardware related one -- your PC is on its last legs lad.

Yeah, last time I saw something like this: it was the PSU. If you have the means: swap the power supply and see if it still happens. if ti IS the psu, try using a compressor to blow out the crap from the power supply. My problem was literally just the PSU overheating on load due to dust build up.

If you have your gpu overclocked this might help you because I had the same problem:
Try lowering your overclock a little bit (50MHz core clock for me).
For some reason Palworld is the only game where my overclock isn't stable and crashes after a bit but since 50MHz is pretty much nothing you shouldn't notice it in the performance

there was only one time ever that i had my PC SHUTDOWN (as in fully turn off) and it was ghost recon breakpoint on low settings where the pc was demanding more power then my PSU could supply, i turned off the rgb on the fans and that fixed it (yes thats how close it was)

but eventually i just upgraded my PSU (i also upgraded my GPU since i had to unhook so much)

your CPU might be overheating...watch out for your temps!

PSU / Temperature / Overclocking
or any HW problem

try some stress test software to find what problem you have
you can look before that into Windows Event Log, if is there any info what happens

that's what I'm worried about... I haven't tried other games yet, but I imagine that's what'd confirm it. I wouldn't be surprised, though, since I logged several hours prior without issue, and this just cropped up out of nowhere... that said, I'm also wondering if it's a CPU heating/performance issue since my CPU is a bit old at this point and has seen about 3 rigs now

I don't overclock, but I think I heard lowering the clock speed anyway (subclocking?) could help

I figured as much, but thought I should include that anyway. If it were a Linux issue, I imagine I'd see freezing/staling rather than complete abrupt shutdown

If a game causes your whole PC to crash or shut down, it's either a hardware problem or an OS bug. A properly working OS and hardware won't allow applications to bring down the whole system.

Can you recommend a good stress test app that would have useful logs in the event of a hard crash?

If temp isn't the issue its probably CPU/PSU related.

It's also possible there's a temp spike that your monitoring software isn't quick enough to pick up, those graphs are usually ticking over every second or so whereas the failsafes are obviously much faster.

I have had this issue and took the lazy approach of limiting CPU power usage as a bandaid fix, because i dont have the money to go out buying extra PSU's and stuff to try and troubleshoot something that might not even be in the PC (everything along the way from the PC to the mains could be a potential issue).

The main game that highlighted the issue for me was Path of Exile, as it can be very demanding on CPU but also GPU. Battletech and X4:Foundations are another couple CPU intensive games (but PoE is free so yeah, could be good for testing if you have the patience for that type of game).

if other games with similar settings/strain causes it too its probably PSU.
if youre running uncapped fps, cap it to 60 for starters
