How in the name of God, has PalWorld become so popular?

Someone enlighten me. A casual observer like myself would see this as a glorified or overhyped Pokemon retread, so why are people craving an Aldi version of Pokemon, and who is this target demographic? Because it's not the older generation that's succumbed to this obvious cash grab. Which begs the question: why are zoomers flocking to a title that will fade into obscurity by the time the school year is finished?


Illuminate my curiosity, because on the surface, it appears to be substanceless hype, mostly propagated by hype-beast merchant streamers that offer nothing of value. The 21st-century equivalent of Pokemon Snap.

people have been wanting a pokemon game like this -open world, traversal features- for a long time, and with the decent graphics and added multiplayer, basebuilding, combat.. it's just a genuinely good game.

it corners the market demand ànd is a good game in it's own right. I wouldn't call it a 'we have pokemon at home' at all, it FAR surpasses the garbage nintendo released with their piss poor attempts at console pokemon. it was limited, performance was trash, looked like ass and was just boring and completely lackluster. this game is actually trying.

good price, great game, if it was a blatant rip id still play. couldnt give a stuff about big companies crying or internet weirdos jumping on the hate train because their favourite influencer/streamer/youtuber told them how to think and feel about it

It's a game that on the outside looks like somebody pointing towards the sky to challenging the gods, but in actuality is a devotee to said god but wanting to put their own twist on it. Said twist being something other followers have wanted for years. This covers "it's just pokemon with guns" angle. End of the day, it's what "the people" wanted.

That said, for an early access game, it runs remarkably well, has a lot of content at the very start compared to others, ARK: Survival Evolved being the biggest comparison. and even most of the bugs present are not absolutely game breaking. The main ones that are being server crashes and world corruption, which is something that can and will happen to even fully developed games and the team has done their best to address those issues. That is another reason people are playing it outside of "pokemon with guns".

And also, the great outrage caused by the game existing and people talking about, even in a negative light, is causing a lot of eyes to focus on it and giving it a chance just to see what the hate/hype is about.

In time it could very well be just nothing but hype that will die down and thus the game itself will die, but for right now Palworld is lightning in a bottle in the middle of a perfect storm of drawing more to it.

I'd agree price is a huge aspect of it. It's a reasonably-solid game one would expect from an off-the-shelf engine, these days, but for fans of animation/animated characters, there's a nice chunk of lovingly-animated creatures (I went in expecting much worse) that populate the world and automate your resource grinding in a pleasant-to-watch way. The added tinge of 'lad culture', of devs playfully and unapologetically ruffling feathers with darker aspects is the cherry on top that has been sorely missing from gaming for too long, now, broadly speaking.

Tbh, I never got into Pokemon. But I have played Ark, and they have these little Poke like balls to store your dinos, and I obviously knew about Pokemon, just never liked it. I seen Palworld trending on steam, and without knowing the hype, i purchased it. Now I'm 120+ hours in and I haven't liked a game this much in awhile, and cant wait for its full release and expansions. I will say the community hasn't really captured any one audience, all types of people love the game, but for their own reasons. Half are disgusted by half the community sexualizing Pals. All i gotta say is to truly understand just give it a try, buy it, set a timer for 1:50 and if you don't like it so far get a refund.

Almost certainly got reported for being insulting. Devs don't moderate this forum as far as I can tell, and Valve mods only act on reports.

No offence, but I expect a more nuanced take than "it's just fun". Fun is entirely subjective...

Isn't that the crux of what makes a game worth playing though? I can't explain why I like a lot of the games I do. Sometimes it just clicks.
