Are there passives that pals can't spawn with?
Or is my luck just trash? I've been sitting here trying to catch a Univolt with Vanguard and instead I just have a bunch of Foremen and Motivational Leaders.

You can get Univolt with Vanguard naturally without breeding.

There are some passives that only specific pals can spawn with. Lyleen can only get "Spirit Emporer" if you tame and cannot get it from breeding for example unless at least one of the parents has Spirit Emporer. This is true for some of the legendary/epic tier pals.

That's an interesting tidbit, didn't know that.

Another example is Jetragon has "Divine Dragon" which gives 20% boost to dragon type damage it does. It can only be obtained off this specific boss.

So basically there are some you can only get a specific way or rather off a specific boss, but MOST of the basic ones like Vanguard, Ferocious, Swift, Artisan, and Burly they can get on natural spawns randomly or even breeding randomly.

jep mew is right almost every endgame pal has his own perk that boosts different elemental dmg so they are good for breeding but nothing else XD

Jormuntide Ignis cannot get any special passives like "Legend" or "Divine Dragon" because it cannot spawn with them and you cannot breed it either since you cannot get it by crossbreeding. Best you can get on that one is "Lucky", "Ferocious", "Musclehead" and "Hooligan".

Informative thread, but captured 58 of these things with no Vanguard. Even got a Lucky. Screw it, I'll just see if I can get one through breeding...

If you want to go the breeding route, do normal catching by the side. And make sure you breed without parents with garbage passives, because those passives have a higher chance to be given to the child.

https://palworld.gg/breeding-calculator

Click on "find all combinations for child" and check if you don't have a parent with the passive you want.

Found it already, but thanks! Turns out I had a good Vanwyrm which would work according to the calculator, and I was able to pair it with the only Univolt that popped up with Stronghold (going for player buffs). At the very least, all the caps should condense my result to 3-star.

Surprised you wouldn't breed on swift and runner as well. Assuming you're using it while mounted.

I'm probably going to*, it's just not priority since it's a battle mount. I usually travel on flying pals, since ground ones (as lightning-fast as Direhowl is) keep getting caught on cliffs and rocks, and I don't want to use 2 pal slots for mobility. :P

Ground pals are king for dungeons, though, so always good to keep at least one.

*Unless my luck is so bad that it takes multiple attempts to get Vanguard even on the egg...

You pretty much can't since the options that breed into them are nearly non-existent. But lucky is mid as far as passives go. Better work related passives exist, and better attack related passives exist.

You actually can according to the breedign calculator here. https://palworld-breeding-calculator.com/

breed jetdragon with a jormuntide ignis to make Helzephyr, then breed that helzephyr with mossanda to create jormuntide, then breed that jormuntide with a jormuntide ignis to make another jormuntide ignis.

That feeling when your family tree is a pretzel.
