Pretty much what i thought. Oh well back to manually gathering :D
Best option is to try and find a base location with nearly everything you need in one location. There are a few like that. At a minimum, pick (move if needed) to one that has lots of ore. I'd suggest a thread about that very topic. I know a few good spots. Quite a few videos on this topic also.
I had specific pals for mining (digtoise) and transport (ragnahawk) and they work just fine when i'm around. Problem is they do not move at all when i'm away from that base.
The OP is not talking about how the AI works when he is at base. When you leave the base, the pals often stop working altogether. This I think is a basic problem with the UE5 engine that this game uses. Chunks are unloaded when a player is not present. A game can compensate by crafting stuff when the chunk is loaded based on time passed since last loaded, but this does not work for stuff not crafting in a bench like this game uses for the most part.
