I'm 60 something days in game and I have not had a wandering trader visit my base.
Except on the first day at the first spawn location where he proceeded to get stuck and I couldn't interact with him.

Are wandering merchants visiting your base even a thing, or did I misinterpret that first instance?

They wander not necessarily to your base but its possible.

Yeah he never returned after the first time for me either. But you can find them in towns and other stuff, they don't really have much different from what I remember.

I have yet to see one 28hrs in. I think I found a stationary one standing near a random shop npc on an island, but that's it.

i've had like two visits from them after like 90 hours of playtime. you just have to wait OP

I just capture the one trader from the settlement so I have one I can use at my base. Same with pal trader. They are a pain to catch and you gotta fend off allot of guards but we'll worth it. You'll need at least 100 giga spheres.

I found it heavily depends on where you set your base up and if raiders have a "logical path" or not.

Two bases on the beach near Wumpo Botan? No trader, not once, ever.

A base just north of Chillet (across the wooden bridge)? Two trader visits in three hours, but they got stuck on the road down below.

An ore base just by Relaxaurus Lux? Zero traders.

I played for 100+ hours and I never had one visit me after the very first one.

I just visit the traders in one of the towns instead.

they don't travel to your base. iirc, they have set spawn locations. (sometimes they have routes, but not always)

if you build a base in those spawn locations and you build structures on top of their spawn point, chances are they won't spawn, just like if you build structures on top of an ore node or a tree, after you chop or mine it down. those nodes would no longer respawn until you remove the structures blocking it from spawning.

The very first one that generally wanders in when you set your first base up is lvl 1 so that you can capture it easily. Very handy to have around to sell stuff to and buy something now and again.

When you have placed your first palbox a wandering merchant will spawn, and head towards your base. This is a one-time deal, so plan ahead and farm balls to catch him when he arrives. Put your pals away so they don't kill him.

Other than that, there are settlement merchants which you can also catch, and will eventually respawn in SP (not sure about servers yet, haven't seen any NPCs respawn) and the event merchants that will spawn at randomly places, usually being creamed by thugs or mobs - you can save them and catch them too.

they don't last long, the different gangs kill them.

Yeah they do it says someone is coming to visit your base. Then this event never happens again after the first time. Hence the topic. I think it's just not working as intended. Most 'wandering' merchants don't wander.

I saw my first wandering trader the other day, barely noticed him as he was dead, killed in big battle between PETA (I mean free pal people) and pals PETA was killing.

I've been noticing a lot of conflicting anecdotal information floating around about how base raid scaling works. Some people are claiming it's player level, pal levels at base, base level, dungeons/content explored, and all sorts of other things. So I decided to test things myself by making a fresh long-term single player save where I just don't upgrade my base at all.

Anyways, as a result of not leveling up my base, I simply don't get any raids, but I do get several wandering trader events. The save is currently in the early 20s both in days and character level, and I've had 5 wandering traders visit my base. Each time was clearly broadcast via a blue message. I even started collecting them to see if it would affect them spawning in the future. It doesn't.
