I agree it's not a great system, I just don't have a better idea, and clearly neither did the devs.
Cooking pot and fire in general should be the same way, I mean fire cooks things, in any other survivalcraft game you just queue something up and it tames some time but you can do other things while you wait for it to finish. A simple QoL improvement, just make it so you don't get player exp for tasks that complete with no work done.
