why cant they sort things?

they store things in the closest box available, they take stacks into account, but it wont stop them from throwing your food in an old box if its closer than the feeding basket

There are definitely some tricks to the system.
Food is the only category that gets a special 'sorting' priority. For instance, if the feedbox is full, and there is a refrigerator, they will haul to the refrigerator. Since Pals only eat from slot 1 in the feedbox, you can fill the five other slots and get pal's to haul food (ingredients) to refrigerator. There is one caveat to this though, and that is this only works with perishable ingredients; stuff like honey and cotton candy will usually be sorted to the nearest storage box.

They will store to the closest box regardless and use items from the closest.
