The last thing I personally want is to be going around minding my own business then get randomly attacked by another player.
There needs to be some kind of PvP arena on the map that people can go to if they want to participate in PvP. What would be cool would be the option to visit these arenas and spectate the PvP battles.
Pal arenas could be cool and hopefully lead to more customisation of pals.
Or they could adjust rocket launcher damage for PvP and it'd be perfectly balanced :)
Pretty sure they will not add open world PvP (like Player vs Base of someone offline) type PvP. They will have opt in only, with arenas or something similar like a dungeon. So far the devs have made some smart design decisions so I don't see them all the sudden getting stupid and adding open world PvP and having the game go to hell in a hand basket.
Battlemetric does not pull servers directly from server browsers.
Feel free to supply your own statistics if you think mine are wrong :)
Just opened the game, searched for "PvE", highest pop server is.. 87 players. And it's not even pure PvE, it's just PvP limited to certain zones on the map.
Searching for PvP servers.. 671 players, 604, 498, 489..
Needless to say, PvE is a tiny subsection of the Rust playerbase
Raids, I imagine, might actually impact the balance more since it's likely for them to be tuned independent of world settings. Currently the game is very casual-friendly, allowing players to pretty much use whatever pal team is their favorite without too much difficulty(outside of a few fights.) Raids come along and might force some meta team or very good traits many may not want to use. Trait breeding in particular is a source of frustration, given good graces now only because it doesn't really matter(again, outside of a few exceptions.)
They would have to designe a PvP mode in another way than the base game to make it interesting, maybe something like titan fall where you just duke it out in a premade map with capture points or something and balance out pals with different weaponry as titans.
