Reptyro passive - Ore-loving Beast

Can anyone please explain how Reptyro’s passive skill actually works? I’ve read the wiki and the Pal Deck,, but it makes no sense. How can it improve the efficiency of mining ore when mounted when you can’t ride it and mine ore at the same time. Or am I missing something here?
I really want to use this pal, since he’s great in battle, but if I can’t efficiently and quickly mine with it, I’ll just stick with Digtoise.

You can ride it and use its skills to mine the ore. Works with mounts but better with this one.

Give it 3 tornado skills or other good moves is what I use and just watch the tornado melt ores. Not sure if fire will burn your base down so i wouldn't use it/ try it. But at least in my single player game no matter how many times I hit my base while mining like that I haven't damaged it any.

Thank you for this info. While I have given it a try using tornado skills, as you suggested, I think I will stick with Digtoise as there is a high chance of aggroing passive pals nearby with stray shots or tornadoes flying around.
