So what color chest does the gold key open? So far the highest chest I've found is red which takes a silver key to open. But what chest uses the gold key? (Purple, Gold, Red) Is there a different color I have not discovered yet?

all three tiers of key are gotten from yellow chests, and are used to open red chests. the specific key depends on the level range of the area you're in

So most red chests I find tell me I need a silver key to open. I take it that there is a red colored chest somewhere that is a higher level that needs a gold key? I guess I just haven't found it yet?

Yeah, I have like 30 gold keys ... no luck in finding chests to open.

it seems like the color of a chest is random per spawn; you can come back to where a chest was later on and end up finding another one that's a different color

dungeon chests only ever want to be purple or yellow for me though. this might be an intentional failsafe to help prevent your world from filling up with red chests and no keys

I've gotten red chests in dungeons, but only in side rooms, never the portal room. The portal room chests seem tuned to drop more schematics and accessories as well. It would be pretty lame to clear a dungeon just to find locked chests at the end, I assume that's what they're thinking.

So after some more searching I finally found the red chests that use the gold key. In the north/snow area near the boss Froststallion. I found 4 red chests that used the gold keys.

So by the looks of it, gold chests in the desert area can drop silver keys. Red chests in the desert take silver keys. Gold chests in the snow area can drop gold keys which also open the high level red chests in the snow area.
