aye the lore is you're a terrible owner for sure :p
feed them, build them a spa, build them beds to sleep in
they'll almost never get depressed if you treat them well / as the game teaches
sure, one or two will occasionally overwork themselves, but it's rare
pet it / feed it some fancy food and it'll immediately be happy
I had to do that like thrice in 50+ hours

for injuries that's different & a bug related to spawning as far as I can tell
no lore for it afaik, tell yourself they are super clumsy
they keep tripping on top of each other / injuring themselves ^^

Yes. They are terrified of you so much that they are spontaneously developing injuries and their bodies are overproducing of fatigue poisons.
