Breeding pen is nothing but frustration
First its a major pain to assign the pals to the pen, then they run out and go do other crap instead of staying there to mate. The pathing on this game is what puts a serious damper on any fun it tries to provide.

Same. When trying to assign I often have 'this pal can't do cooling', pals repeatedly collapsing and sleeping on the floor for a few seconds or just flat out 'no work available in the area' errors. At best I have to try throw the pals towards the back of the pen a couple of times, at worst I end up rebuilding the entire pen.

I really hope they change the breeding pen UI to that of the viewing cage. I hate having to try catch my pals before they run off to sleep/work. I hate needing to constantly carry them to the pen (and then 50/50 have it bug out to assign them). Not to mention the annoying bug that mounts you every time you throw/assign a pal somewhere.

Edit: As so many people are offering flat/foundations as a solution - my base is in a perfectly flat location (-345 -200) and they're on stone foundations; still doesn't matter all my breeding pens still frequently bug out as refuse to accept assignments. Once stuff assigns it's fine (well except for my Shadowbeaks, as those will often just die when I teleport back to the base while they're breeding). It's getting them to assign in the first place that's the buggy part. That said, I have been semi-AFK breeding multiple creatures up to 4 stars, so maybe that's why I've seen more bugs.

The only problem about using the viewing cage ui is that the pals have to be assigned to the base for them to be assigned. It would be nice to have such an interface either at the palbox itself or a unique build that allows for specific allocation of pals. Either that or when throwing a pal at a workstation they display a highlight of some kind saying what the job would be if thrown at the cursor.

I wished there were two beds inside the pen. And that by placing a food basket in it would result in the pals not leave without the player's interaction.

And for devs to fix the bug where placed pals sre not recognized by the pen. Like, seriously!
From my understanding, you need to make sure the breeding pen is on flat ground and not on a place where resource nodes spawn. It's prob still a bug but it seems to help my friend and me.

What?

You litterally lift the pals you wanna breed into the pen.

That makes them a fixed assignment.

They will only go out to eat and sleep...

Correct, most of the time that works fine.

Sometimes they just bug out and decide hey, gonna go chop a tree for a bit and you have to reassign them, and sometimes the game just decides the breeding pen is no longer a valid work task anymore and tries to assign them to something else like cooling for example. :S

It would be nice if we could use a structures interface to assign, and lock a worker to a specific task, or alter the priorities of tasks for a specific worker, and either lock, or unlock specific tasks. IE: Dear frost kingpaca, don't gather, ever, just cool, only cool, forever.

There's a bug where even though you do that they will run out and do whatever. My friends chalked it up as the pen was not on flat ground and there were resource nodes where it was located.

As I have said in other breeding threads this worked for me but I do t know how much it will work for you.

Put a food trough in the breeding pit and put food in it, the problem I had was they left to eat and then got sidetracked into doing something else.

Maybe Idk, I never had that problem but I also build my rannch and breeder in a location that kinda makes sence D

What they're saying is that when they do that the pets dont assign .

Personally I've found that you need to carry the pets near the back before they will assign . Of course you need to make it a point to have a lot of cake in the box as well or they aint gonna do like they do on the discovery channel

The bug is present on even grounded locations. So yeah, it is an obnoxious bug to encounter.

Some buildings give more frustration than others. I've had a problem with the breeding pen where I had another structure too close and had to move it. Then another time the Pals would keep leaving to do other stuff, and could be re-assigned unless you moved them to your party and filled up their hunger, then back to the base assignment and immediately manually assigned.

Eventually I got tired and just destroyed and rebuilt it in a different location. This appears to have resolved the problems encountered.

Please feel free to look at my guide that covers the breeding farm.

I stopped having AI issues when I made a dedicated base that's all foundation - it stops natural resources from respawning, and as long as you don't have anything else that they'd automatically assign their task to, they'll stay put and fulfil their duty.

You can build beds inside the farm's fenceline, too!
yeah basicaly what shazzamon said , just build your whole base on wood/stone paltform and you'll have wayyyy less AI problem.
my only probleme are thoses jormuntide are so gigantic that they stuck their head everywhere
i have no problems with this... you need to put both in and a cake in the box thats it only takes a few min and you get a egg sure if they not both in they will go out after some time or if there is no cake left in the chest
