Rust? You host your own server.
Minecraft? host your own server.
Running a server costs resources, time and effort to maintain and keep running properly, you're lucky they allow you to run it on your local computer and not be forced to pay for a hosting platform that charges you monthly.
Imagine being mad at the developers for not running a server for you, do some research in server hosting before you blame the staff/developers, why should they pay to maintain your server?
You can literally go to Steam Tools and download the 'Dedicated Server' and run/config it how you like, as long as your computer remains on, the server will be live, don't like this? then I suggest you pay monthly to a provider that will keep this running 24/7 for you.
Bandwidth, hardware and maintaining a server is not free.
This also is not Sons of the forest (Nor The Forest for that matter). Those two games are entirely different where coop isnt oriented to 8 players maax.
The server engine is both included with the game, because single player is just a localhost server automatically spun up for you, and as a separately available package for dedicated usage. This is how most multiplayer co-op games are engineered these days, including Satisfactory, Core Keeper, and Valheim off the top of my head, because I've ran servers for all those.
It's in PalWorldSettings.ini
They did say that servers are experimental and probably werent expecting 8million players to play.
The game only has 1week an did already 4 patchs so its going well for the players, just need to wait a bit more
