Unlimited sphere bug?

So I had a bug earlier where my character would only hold a sphere and the only thing I could switch was the kind of sphere it was.
I tried dropping the sphere to fix it, noticed I was still holding it, and tried throwing it...to find it would still throw, and as long as I did not have the sphere in question in my inventory, I could throw an unlimited amount of them with no repercussions.

As someone who is enamored with bugs, I gotta ask, does anyone know how to reproduce this bug? And any ideas on what might cause it?
