There is a genre of Monster Taming type games. You can't copyright all Monster Taming. In these games you have Monsters. That is generic. An individual model is copyrighted. A generic looking animated character based on a sheep can not be copyrighted. Lots of animated games have sheep.

Should D&D be able to sue Nintendo because they have animated Dragon type characters in Pokemon. Of course not.

And after that, the Tolkien Estate sue TSR for not only stealing dragons (Smaug) from The Hobbit, but like multiple ideas and references from all of his other works too (especially Lord of the Rings) in the foundation of D&D. The lawsuits don't just end there...
