Where the hell am I supposed to build a base?

I set up my 1st base in some of the ruins in the starting area, it was difficult because the game klept telling me there was other stuff in the way. Finally found one extremely specific spot where I could build it. There wasn't much space to expand so after unlocking additional buildings I dismantled it to look for a larger spot. But now literally anywhere I try to put a palbox it just tells me I can't build cause there's stuff in the way.

I'm sure I have everything I need to build one. I've tried picking everything up, clearing trees/rocks, killing any pals in the area, none of it fixes the problem. Even when a spot looks like a huge flat open space I still can't build the damn palbox in it.

I even tried giving up and going back to the ruins but I couldn't find the one extremely specific spot it had let me build a palbox on originally so now I just don't have a base.

Am I missing something? This game seems to rely pretty heavily on base building mechanics so it doesn't make much sense to be so severely restricted in base placement.

Any open-ish flat space will do. There are plenty around the map. My favorite first base spot is on the beach when you go back down into the ruins. Raids can't reach you, and you're right next to a dungeon entrance. The palboxes act as fast travel points, so it being out of the way isn't a problem either.

Had this same issue after dismantling palbox. Rejoining server kinda fixed it.

Do you have a collared pal that likes to stand in front of you while placing stuff?

away from any marked locations on the map. and the pal box counts as a special structure. the annoying thing is the pal box, because if you build a floor then place it on it, theres a bunch of space around it you cant place anything down on. so you are kind of encouraged to put the pal box outside or build a larger room for it

Lvl 10/lvl15 additional bases can be placed.
And prob your "dark pal" flying with you and thats why you cant place (im just throwing them at palcenter then i want to build smth)
