Any way to put signs above storage crates, make them distinguishable or find specific items?

I have been trying to organize the inventory of my base but my friends don't really know where to put certain items. In games like Minecraft I usually put signs or item frames in front of every chest so you know which chests contain wood, rock, metal, etc...

I unlocked the sign thinking I could do a similar thing with it but it not only takes too much space but I can't really place it above any of the crates I made, and my friends are getting a bit confused of where things should go and where they can get certain items. This really isn't a problem with crafting items since any crafting table will use all the times from your chests as long it is within your base, but when you need specific things such as eggs, spheres, arrows/ammo, food and other things, it can be a bit tedious having to look from storage crate to storage crate to see if you got a certain thing you are looking for.

For context I am currently level 13 and my friends are a couple of levels bellow that or more since I hop in my world without them from time to time to improve our base and do some organizing (because if I wasn't the "housewife" of my group for any survival game our storage would look messier than a demolished building), so I don't have a whole lot of things unlocked, but any recommendation is appreciated, even if it is something I can't unlock yet due my low level.
