For those not there yet I would entirely skip the Shock Baton...it's not worth the resources wasted to make it.
Also side note: Lifmonk with it's weapon skill Sub Machine Guns shreds HP fast.
My current setup lets me have 2 pals, and eventually 3 out at once. So that's 1 pal tanking, 2 pals running DPS, and myself chipping in with roughly equal damage.
Makes fights a breeze when you actually pay attention to the passives....
...
Then again, you can always tweak your server settings and boost your "Damage to pals" by 2 times as much.
I feel ranged weapons are very useful, especially when you gain access to poison and burning ammo.
Those DOT effects are pretty useful imo
Crossbow ammo is also far cheaper, either to buy or craft.
I'm not sure if there is a range or damage falloff difference.
The only advantage I know of is that handguns have multiple shots before reloading, so you can (maybe?) get higher DPS out of a handgun - but it'll chew through the ammo to do so. That's really the tradeoff there, and if you're willing to spend the extra money or time/materials for the ammo.
Personally, I tried both handguns, wasn't impressed, and went back to blue-quality crossbow. Later found an even better crossbow pattern.
Up to a certain point, Pals are intended to be the main damage source.
Late-game, it depends on build. Get a full team of Pals that boost player attack and a good quality Rifle? Pal that applies elemental damage to players attack?
Or go with a pal that launches weaponry like the egg-laying grenade launcher toucan?
Either way can supposedly do insane damage with the right build and prep....
or use mounted pals/ equitable ones
the melee weapons are pretty weak but you do need something to do chip damage with to get those HP's down
if you really want to use guns, get yourself a team of Lifmunk.. their gun are much stronger than any gun you can craft..
I prefer using weapons to weaken enemies and have my own pal focus on the same target as me. Right now I'm level 32 and I don't have complains about my regular old crossbow.
Helps that their respective ammo types are very easy to find in the game, so you likely won't need a melee weapon.
