Placing the furnaces indoor or outdoor also did not make a difference.
I will experiment a little bit but it seems to be not too common.
When I throw them at my furnace, the game tells me there is no direct job for them. I have the same problem with my logging site and stone pit, where the "specialists" refuse to see a doable job, but at least there I can go out mining and lumberjacking myself.
Getting them out of the base and then assign them again doesn't change anything, neither does removing the few torches I had placed (they weren't lighting those either).
I hoped I could assign specific jobs with the Monitoring Stand, but that isn't the case either. So right now I have 9 pals, where 3 love to assist building stuff, 1 occasionally waters some seeds and the rest agrees that there is absolutely nothing to do at my base, while all production just remains dormant. 😅
Arrogant Arsox, just chilling on my High Quality Workbench, right next to the job he refuses to do! 🧐
* PAL has other skills that are in demand elsewhere in the base. If you find and hatch a Scorching Egg, a Flammabelle is a great example of this problem, because it will hang out in the ranch, slowly producing flame organs, rather than actually cooking anything. Foxparks is a great Kindling pet as a result, because he only has Kindling and won't get distracted.
* PAL has too many things to do. This is probably the most common issue, and is related to having a bunch of torches that the PALs want to turn on. This can also be caused by Heaters, which are entirely unnecessary (campfires do the same thing without needing a PAL to blow on it) or having multiple kindling jobs queued (you also have ore you are turning into ingots while trying to cook food).
* Pal is upset. This can happen early game when you're just feeding them raw berries. Give them better food, and a spa to hang out in, or the PALs will be grumpy more than productive. Generally, you'll want to provide PALs with cooked berries soonest, then when you unlock wheat and milling, provide them Jam Buns or Pancakes. Late game, when you get veggie crops unlocked, Salads are great and give a work speed bonus. Pizza technically is better than Salads, but requires an electric oven, and are relatively slow to make.
* Pal is stuck/confused/lost. Remove PAL from the working area and into your box, then back again. This will reset its position and help it get back to work.
