"No Immediate Work in the Vicinity..."
"Switching to automatic work mode."

This ♥♥♥♥ makes my blood boil. There is no reason these pals can't just do the task you place them at.

Place them in the Pal Box for a few seconds, get them out and it should work. There are a few bugs that way, especially after a Raid, if you have them on. And currenlty they not really go inside buildings or to upper floors.

I now have the same problem, but it only affects the workshops that are in the house, although they worked for 15 hours, everything works outside the house

Try placing workshops on a descent distance from each other (like about a length of the workshop itself). Their hitboxes seem to be much bigger than their appearances. Ranch's hitbox seem to be gigantic, so I'm placing it far away from the rest of work stations. This manner of helped me to get rid of this message in many cases.
In some other rare cases (which I believe are bugs) a workshop just stop being "workable" despite the fact that pals were working there some minutes ago in automatic mode. In such cases I delete and rebuild it and it starts to work fine.

If you're on single player, exit to main menu then go back in. It happens with moderate frequency to me and that fixes it every time.

I believe demolishing and rebuilding the building in question also fixes it.

Is there a way to perma assign them to a station? Or is it just throw them at it and hope?

I usually just let them do what they want and they get around to doing what I want eventually.

it seems like some jobs will perma assign, and some wont.

Putting the fire fox on the bonfire to cook, he will always immediately stop whatever he's doing to cook whatever I set, and will continue to do it, only stopping to eat or sleep.

It also seems like there is a "soft priority" code for Pals, where if you pick them up and throw them at something they'll try to prioritize that over everything else.

An example is the duckling I threw at the crafting bench, anytime I try to craft, or set something to craft, he will immediately drop whatever he's doing (unless its eating or sleeping), to help craft, or craft it himself.

Another is setting the second duckling to the berry patch, whenever its ready to water, he will immediately drop whatever he's doing to water it.

Yes but I think that's because the fox can only use the fire related items. Take a Tanzee who can craft, plant, transpo and...lumber?...and they do what they feel like. *shrug* no biggie.
