Multiplayer works by you either joining a dedicated server or having a friend (or yourself) host a 4-player co-op world.
You can't bring existing characters into different worlds (so, you can't bring your solo world character into a friend's game).
Multiplayer is co op where you can invite friends to a game you or they host or there are dedicated servers you can play on.
You can also play solo. I am a solo player and having a blast with the game.
You can play single player, p2p multiplayer, or server multiplayer. Characters are saved to worlds and there isn't a transfer tool yet although one is in the works.
P2P multiplayer is up to 4 players with one of them hosting. There's no tether distance but the more areas that are loaded, the more it'll strain the hosts PC and possibly cause lag (irrelevant if they have a high end pc).
Server multiplayer is up to 32 players but is frankly really janky right now and the servers go down or get overloaded frequently and theres a lot of lag.
There is no PvP yet and the devs said they may add it at some point but that it won't be "lawless PvP" like you see in ark.
