The more you catch the more your bonus xp is. It's a scaling reward based on how many you've caught.
So if you've only caught say 10 lamballs but your wife has caught 10 lamballs and 10 tanzee, she will get more bonus xp.
I've completed a few already and my bonus xp rewards are in the 5,000 range.
Every single pal you catch up to 10 increases exp gains from catching all pals permanantly, its not even just the full set of 10 that does it.
Game tells you right out the gate, the tutorial is small as hell and it still tells you catching pals is the best way to gain exp for the player.
