It would be nice to have plenty of space to build as you go.
Being forced to place buildings so close to another causes pathing issues too.
Dude, you have a giant blue circle around the palbox to tell you where you can build and it still be considered "your base". If you want a snap-to-grid system you'd make base building even harder.
You get 100% of your materials when you breakdown anything you built. The game doesn't punish you if you make a mistake, or if you really suck at figuring out how to place stuff.
A square fits into a circle, and so does circle fit into a square.
Though yeah you just want to make it bigger, not actually a square space.
Working on it on my game. I am planning to grid out the walls with foundation bits, I have so much wood that it wouldnt even dent my reserves.
