Farming is used for animals in the farm.
Transportation means they pickup items and bring them to the closest box
Gathering is for crops.
Looks like you've puzzled it all out correctly. If a pal has the farming icon then they produce something there. It can get confusing when you have overlap(such as Lamball) but it becomes clearer with specialized ones such as Melpaca.
If you lack transporters, items will be sitting around all over the place
Yeah for berries, wheat, etc. you need all of those covered. Some pals can do more than one of those so you don't specifically need 4 pals, that's just worst case scenario.
Transporter pals get stuck very easily if the have to path to anything more complicated than that.
Also, food will be automatically carried to the feed box (unless it's full) so build that close to the farm as well. Plus it will be less distance for your farm workers to go feed.
Well there are different pals that can do different things and interacts with the different work benches you can make.
Farming is a multi layer thing, you need a planter, a waterer, and a harvester to get the food off of the farms.
There is mining which you can set up for your base by the requesite items, and you need a miner pal.
and lastly there is lumberjack pals with the tree plantation that will constatly give wood so long as you have a pal to do things with...
Also some pals do multiple things , some will be able to build and work on workbenches while others do just one thing. It takes some experimentation and catching of the pals.
Expanding on this you can also force pals to take the product to a cooler if the feeder is already full of stuff that they farm but can't stack there. You can, for example, have your feeder be berries, then cotton candy in the rest of the slots. They always eat from left to right. So as long as the berries don't run out, the new stuff can be stacked in the cooler.
