What he means is you spend a lot of time exploring on the ground because there is a lot to discover. When you fly you miss a lot, which is why when you unlock flying it's fairly slow so you miss less. Once you unlock the better flyers you're already fairly familiar with the world so you know where you want to go. This is called game design.
It's for progression
They aren't. Flying is dependent on stats, when you capture a pal they have different stats. Some are better than others and some augment the player. You may have one with the "swift" trait which would make it faster and could be preferred as a tier 3 trait. Level them up, boost the stat at the statue, raise their rank, and breed to get better. Jet is the best though. High stamina, high speed, lots of fun to fly.
The intention is for you to use the crafting and breeding system. Untill you go learn thos this is just a skill issue. ^^
