the penguin looking pal has been really useful to me for combat

No sure how early you're counting, but personally I love using Dinossom, which can spawn as low as level 12. It's a cool plant-dragon, seems pretty bulky and will slap anything nearby to paste. For very very early, Daedreams with their unique pal item act as a force multiplier by assisting in combat without needing to be deployed, so you get two active pals for the price of one.

I love Foxparks. Its ability lets you pick it up and use it like a flamethrower. Huge DPS, especially if you can get one with the Ferocious trait.

The Foxsparks dude and the Eiktherdeer and the Fat slow bird are all early on and do well. Riding and shooting with the bird or deer is nice you can stay mounted and throw the Spheres. Also the deer charge for getting around is nice.

It seems fire is op because it does damage over time and same goes for dark types doing poison damage.
The fire fox thing you get can be used as a flamethrower it's broken.

Lifmunk and foxsparks with their harnesses absolutely destroy ♥♥♥♥. Hell, early game it seems like all the pals do insane damage. They just attack slowly.

I picked up a Chillet recently and its ridable. has pretty good abilities that can freeze enemies in place and a dragon blast attack that has a good size AOE that'll apply a DOT after about 3 consecutive hits and it buffs your damage as you ride it so you can combined it's damage with your ranged weapons. it's fairly fast too so it can dodge things pretty easily or do hit and run tactics.

Daedream. Their accessory lets you have 2 pals out at the same time. You might have to put them away though if you want to start catching as they'll chase down and fight anything you enter combat with.

gumoss is an absolute tank. also incubators is a pretty early unlock and you can get really lucky some times and hatch pals which are generally like level 25-35 in the wild so their base stats are pretty good but the most op early pal has to be Dinossom if you can get your gumoss leveld to like 15-17 he could tank while you toss spheres frantically to hit the 5% catch

Depends on what you are trying to fight. Also lucky's will standout especially early on. Even something like a Lamball will outperform most early pals if you get a lucky one with dragon cannon or something.

Overall Foxspark and Liftmunk are standouts due to their partner skills, especially Foxspark as he's a fire type with decent damage and most of the good fire types are either far from the starting area or are dual types. Daedream is also a standout that borders on being overpowering due to their partner skill stacking, however Daedream will fall off a bit later on. The deer you find in the early areas also stands out immensely despite being neutral type, as their charge attack does an immense amount of damage in one quick move and they are a fairly fast mount. Nitewing is maybe a bit less of a standout for damage due to their lengthy attack animations, but their starting attack tends to cover a huge area and being a flying mount they open up a lot of options for taking out whole mobs with careful positioning.

For the first tower boss, Fuddler is probably the best choice, even though I find him lackluster otherwise. Rushour's also a good choice who can serve as a mount, but again, there's better mounts other early on. Gumoss is also decent, but only one of his first 3 attacks is ground type. Foxspark also learns a decent ground type attack despite being fire type, so you don't have to switch him out for a ground type if you want to make use of his partner skill.

Daedream is a solid pick early on. Foxsparks and Dinosoom are good too. A Dinosoom always wanders into one of the earlier clearings and is Level 16 or so, it has a handy CC grass move that roots targets in place. I caught the Level 11 field boss (Alphas?) Chillet and kept that in my team too.

A Sparkit with ground moves would be helpful for the first tower boss too. You can teach them moves by plucking skill fruits, and you get those from those shiny looking trees in the open.

Really catch everything! It's fun figuring out what works and they earn EXP alongside you anyways when you do activities.

Currently level 20 and I have Bushi (Level 23 shrine/dungeon) as my main damage dealer with the Musclehead trait (+30% Attack, -% Workspeed). Party consists of Dinosoom, Chillet, Rayhound, and Azurobe.
