The fire fox thing you get can be used as a flamethrower it's broken.
I picked up a Chillet recently and its ridable. has pretty good abilities that can freeze enemies in place and a dragon blast attack that has a good size AOE that'll apply a DOT after about 3 consecutive hits and it buffs your damage as you ride it so you can combined it's damage with your ranged weapons. it's fairly fast too so it can dodge things pretty easily or do hit and run tactics.
Overall Foxspark and Liftmunk are standouts due to their partner skills, especially Foxspark as he's a fire type with decent damage and most of the good fire types are either far from the starting area or are dual types. Daedream is also a standout that borders on being overpowering due to their partner skill stacking, however Daedream will fall off a bit later on. The deer you find in the early areas also stands out immensely despite being neutral type, as their charge attack does an immense amount of damage in one quick move and they are a fairly fast mount. Nitewing is maybe a bit less of a standout for damage due to their lengthy attack animations, but their starting attack tends to cover a huge area and being a flying mount they open up a lot of options for taking out whole mobs with careful positioning.
For the first tower boss, Fuddler is probably the best choice, even though I find him lackluster otherwise. Rushour's also a good choice who can serve as a mount, but again, there's better mounts other early on. Gumoss is also decent, but only one of his first 3 attacks is ground type. Foxspark also learns a decent ground type attack despite being fire type, so you don't have to switch him out for a ground type if you want to make use of his partner skill.
A Sparkit with ground moves would be helpful for the first tower boss too. You can teach them moves by plucking skill fruits, and you get those from those shiny looking trees in the open.
Really catch everything! It's fun figuring out what works and they earn EXP alongside you anyways when you do activities.
Currently level 20 and I have Bushi (Level 23 shrine/dungeon) as my main damage dealer with the Musclehead trait (+30% Attack, -% Workspeed). Party consists of Dinosoom, Chillet, Rayhound, and Azurobe.
