is there a way to choose a spawn point when starting?

Yes. When you die you can respawn at a few different points or at your base

There must be around 6 to 8 when you get spawned into the world. If I happen to die it's been useful to select a different island to spawn on and then find a Fast Travel Point to go back home. It opens up regions for exploration later on. I've travelled to one or two of the really big islands as well, but they're full of higher level Pals and humans who kill on sight. Managed to survive to find a Fast Travel point though. 🙂
