You also need one of the fire pals eventually. They are good for traveling around in the dark.
Deadream (with necklace)
Hoocrates (boosts the dark type moves of Deadream)
Direhowl (to ride, one of the fastest early game ground mounts)
Foxparks (good attacks and it lights up the area around you as a bonus)
Teaphant (Has a healing ability)
Camp
Cattiva (has mining)
Lifmunk (good allrounder but might be hard to find on the starting island)
Pengulet (can water and has freezing abilities, can also transport)
Tanzee (can chop wood and is also a decent alrounder)
Mau (with a ranch gives passive income so you can buy stuff a merchants)
Note that for camp it really doesn't matter all that much... when you start out the Pals you'll likely encounter are good enough to get you started... I just listed those you might wanna quickly get multiples off so you can level them in case you play with raids on without disturbing your automation
Also I need to look which one it actually is, I think its the further in the island fox (eevee looking one) but it actually creates Pal Orbs. Super useful early game. The ones that look like umbreon but different colors create coins. Pretty much just look at the ones that have Farming skill as they can passively create a lot of useful items.
Seems like the levels don't scale very well, so sometimes venturing past your "safe" area is worth it because you find new Pals that are low level but more useful.
This is what I pretty much did to start as well.
For combat I tend to use Deadream and Dinossom, but i think the random abilities matter (mine has +30% atk). Elemental types have damage bonuses but I haven't been able to tell how strong they are.
Tanzee's can be a pain to find though... much like that Lifmunk I mentioned
