I've not made any schematic gear but they disappear from my crafting benches if I don't have it in my inventory. Maybe it's the same for repairs?
I had a green crossbow I'd crafted around level 16. At level 18, I tried to repair it and couldn't. It was still fine, though, so I went to hunt Giant Chillet again, who dropped 4 ancient parts (bless you and your Pal Skill, Katress).
Later (still lvl 18), the crossbow would let me repair it for the same common materials as the gray crossbow. But I also had to repair my mega shield, which needed 1 ancient part. But when I clicked repair all, it said that it would take 2 ancient parts to repair everything. So I followed a hunch and repaired the crossbow by itself. Sure enough, after repairing it, I was down to 3 ancient parts!
So, my current theory is that the uncommon and higher variants require ancient parts to repair, but only a maximum of 4 materials are shown in the list at a time. As the crossbow already requires 4 types of materials for the common variants, the 5th material isn't displayed.
