How to feed breeders cake?

I had some trouble placing a couple of stations, such as the breeding one. I have finally gotten a male and female pal into it, but I cannot figure out how to 'place the cake" I tried feeding a pet one, I tried dropping it on the ground, and there doesn't seem to be anything to click to get a dedicated window up to place any item. Suggestions?

This right here, be warned that depending on where you build your breeding farm, the box might clip into the terrain, happened to me when I first tried this and was confused for a bit about where this "Chest" was, one relocation later and the chest showed up.
