They could do like most other games and just generate them pre attached, or have them auto generate when they detect a wall beneath.
You basically need a "floor" to place them, but when I did the second floor to try and make them I could not attach any of them. Or more precise I can't make a row so I have a "proper" roof like most houses have.
If you're in the ruins or on the beach below where you saw the cut scene... for some reason I could NEVER get stairs to work right in that space and roofing was just as difficult. (Neither could husband when he tried...) When I moved out of that area into a semi-safe space off to the left / right of the first travel point it magically started working better. I don't think they expected people to try to build right where we got dropped. Even though the beach is kinda good cause you get a dungeon nearby and no one can attack you.
You will need more space and the roof is just difficult. I would report feedback on their form in the game menu and let them know it sucks. That's what I did.

Well, if he use a triangle wall or normal wall, he can put a roof, be he need to aim at the top side part of the wall/trangle wall
