play co-op online with friends?

looking to play with three other friends on a private server (not community)
is there a way to do so without having to download and command prompt a ton of stuff? I should not have to be taking 100 extra steps just to play with a few friends, or am i mistaken and you cant just host a server for friends?

if you playing with 4 people total, you just start a world and on the first screen when creating a world you switch it to multiplayer, once its started you just invite them through steam or with the code.

You only need a dedicated server if you want to be able to play when the host isnt on or if you have more then 4 people

You can host and play, no additional hassle. 4 player limit though

It keeps giving me an error code and telling me to restart my game and pc. tried several times to now avail. Have either of you successfully done this?

Im hosting a dedicated server. and havent encountered that. So i donno what issues people have with normal co op.

Players have overloaded the servers, so standard co-op is hit or miss while this is sorted. Offline play (single player) and dedicated servers aren't using the main servers so they won't have these issues.
