Someone else said it first. Brazil is part of the PAL television and game region. This shouldn't be your first experience seeing it used with a different meaning.

That actually shocked me when I first heard the british slang for cigarettes. Didn't offend me or anything just wasn't expecting it.

Actually, it's "pau", which also translates as "wood". But the pronunciation is the same.

No, it doens't mean what OP said it means. The word is PAU (Pau) and not PAL.

Hehe yeah I never thought anything of it when I lived there, but then I moved abroad and found out that a lot of people had no idea we called them that XD

It's only made worse by the slang we use to describe the process of asking others for a cigarette xD
