question about changing platform
let say I start the game on the game pass and then want to buy the game on steam, would it be possible to use the same save?

Potentially.
If Palworld uses local saves, You should theoretically be able to just place your Gamepass created saves into the Steam versions save folder and load them from there.

I wish the devs would answer this question. I have 1 month of free game pass and was thinking about trying the game using that first and if the game runs well after building a bunch of stuff I'd buy it on Steam.. but I really don't want to start over so :/

Cant say for sure, but I doubt it. Gamepass is XBox/Microsoft and Steam is PC only. Its like asking if you can transfer a PS game save to a NSwitch.

just for an example, you need a script to export your save game data from Starfield on Gamepass so you can use it on the Steam version

some games will use standard folder stucture and put stuff in /Documents/My Games or the usual, but some games will use some kind of encryption like Starfield, worst you can do is try it, play it for a few minutes and see if you can find any save files before investing time

I seem to have found the saves for both steam and game pass. I was looking to copy my steam save to my gamepass in case my friends ever feel like playing. I usually grind the most so it would make sense for me to host. As soon as I found them, they looked completely different in structure. Steam seems to be one folder with the saves files for world, character, etc. but gamepass seems to be 7 folders with no labels as to which is which. It's just a chain of letters and none matched when opening all and comparing the text.

I am pretty illiterate when it comes to this stuff so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Gamepass puts the "save" files in the xbox folder. This can be a custom directory, mine is. hit the [...] in gamepass game page >manage>files> 'BROWSE..' will bring up the right file. The save data will be hidden so make sure you can see hidden files.

The data is alpha numeric strings eg. B0E91CD1-8929-451B-A14D-8CE236A4964F

There are XSP/SMD/XCT/XVI/XVS file extentions for the same stings. ^^ this is my "world" data I believe but I do not yet have the steam version to try to make it work via steam.

Thats not what is beiong attempted here. We are trying to bring our Gamepass saves with us when we change platforms. Alot, myself incluced, tried this on Xbox PC and now have some progress to bring over.

It is very possible with say Valheim or Starfield. The Svae data is pretty compatablie, just drag and drop and you can continue a previous world/playthrough in a different launcher.

This link is to a github that was originally developed to transfer Starfield progress from GamePass to Steam. As of 1 hour ago, it offers support for Palworld. I havent tried it myself but plan to later

XGP ver save is at C:/Users/{YOUR NAME}/AppData/Local/Packages, sort by date you'll see the folder name include palworld. Then click inside and go to SystemAppData, then to the wgs folder. Click on the folder with a lot of code. Now you see several folders. You must keep just one world in game in case of confusing. Each one is included with two files, ignore container files. Another file is the save files we need after.

Next, Steam save file is at C:/Users/{YOUR NAME}/AppData/Local/Pal/Saved/Save Games/{STEAM ID}/. There are folders which corresponding to your worlds. Also I recommend keep just one world then you'll see just one folder here, but it isn't a must. Enter the folder, I deleted the "Backup" folder to prevent possibly restore. Then there will be Level.sav, LevelMeta.sav, LocalData.sav etc. Players folder also has a 0000...001.sav file. Each file is corresponding to the file before in the wgs folder.

Now you need a HEX editor and open every file to compare and rename. Remember making a backup before you do anything edit. You can make a rough guess by file's size then look at a few bytes at the begining to determine. Here if you make the world with same setting, you can just ignore the WorldOption.sav, just a little relief. After rename just replace the same file in steam save folder. It'll replace your steam world so better use a new world. Then enter the game to check if it's done.

Hey Bro, I am willing to ask that I can I convert my friends file to steam also. My friend lost the data except the map data during coverting the data from xgp to steam.
My friend is the host of the co-player game, and he successfully transferred from xpg to steam. But my case is that my xpg game data replace the local data.sav and it still call me to create new character or just convert the map data only. Thankyou.
