EDIT: Finally saw a video talking about breeding, fusions, and infusions. The "rare" trait just gives attack and work speed +15%. When you breed two parents of the same species of pal, they give that species of offspring. For fusions you need to breed the base versions with the right element of pal (so like theres a fire pal with a water variant, you breed the fire version with any water pal to possibly get the variant egg). If you breed two pals of different species that won't result in a fusion you can get a random egg that can be any pal, not just the two that bred.
Traits are often but not always passed down so it might take a few attempts to get the perfect combo. There is no breeding cooldown. Breeding requires cake and a breeding farm building.
You can infuse pals with other pals of the same species, sacrificing the other pals permanently to power it up. Pals start on 0 stars and go to 1 star, then 2, then 3, then 4 through this method. It takes progressively more for each level taking I believe a total of 116 (4/16/32/64). It also boosts the pals unique skill 1 level each time. You can also power up pals with pal souls that you find as drops in the wild. Those can be used to level up specific stats and cost progressively more.
