iirc, there was confirmation on player versus player fights though fighting as seen is more real time unlike majority of pokemon franchise.
In general most RPG players like to have a player driven, or quest chain driven story to guide them through the world. Story + Sandbox elements tends to work well for games, but Sandbox elements alone tends to attract a smaller audience.
There isn’t a story to go to place X and do Y, more like lore to uncover through breadcrumbs of information.

I like having a direct goal to work toward at my pace.
Making some goals as you go should easily occupy you for a while, given there‘s enough content to explore.
Or let your friends set some goals for you ;)
