This is not like THE THING (spoilers?)
THE THING had something this game doesn't... PARANOIA.

This game had none of that. I'd say it is closer to a Cthulhu type story than the Thing.

If anyone tells you this is like THE THING on an oil rig, they are very wrong or lying.

Sure, the monsters resemble the THING, but part of the movie was you did not know who was assimilated or not.

That being said, I did enjoy this game.

This is like saying that The Thing by Carpenter has nothing to do with The Thing from Another World from 1951 or the short story Who Goes There? from 1938. It's all basically the same thing. The game is heavily inspired by it but obviously not a 1:1 adaption.

It is true that one of the main fear factor of the movie The Thing is paranoia and not knowing who to trust but, another big factor is isolation and the inability to escape or get rescued.

I feel like this game took a bit from both the John W. Campbell and Lovecraft universe.

To me this leans way more towards the John W. Campbell side of things though, sure you have the inexplicable monstrosities that would make you go crazy on first sight (Reminds me of Shoggoth) but, those same murderous flesh amalgamation were all co-workers once and the main character is able to tell who they once were and he calls them by their past name, instead of just "monster #69 that worship this elder god #420".

I guess it's not really possible to categories this game into one or the other, it's a bit of both and it is whats makes this game great in my opinion, yes you can tell where the inspirations came from but it doesn't feel like a lazy copy paste when it comes to its various elements.

What I liked about "The Thing" (Carpenter) was the interaction between the employees of the base and the mutual distrust when it was clear that the "creature" could hide in other life forms. In this game, the people on board the oil platform gradually transform and are directly hostile.

It's different, the atmosphere is great in the first few hours, but then after what feels like the twentieth stealth sequence it wears out a lot and you just want to get to the end for the resolution.

Here, however, the game leaves you with many question marks.
