Game is short and has not much of a gameplay, but Scottish voice actors are jus brailiant and atmosphere is chilling, scared a ♥♥♥♥♥ out of me.

Still Wakes the Deep was quite a disappointment for me. It features on-the-rail, strictly linear gameplay, not too dissimilar from the "Houses of Horrors" in Theme Parks - you are being carried forward in a little car while being subjected to jumpscares - because that's all there is to it. The monsters are straight-up rip-offs from the old movie "The Thing". On the surface, it looks Lovecraftian, but there is no mystery, no real exploration, no discovery, no interesting characters, and a paper-thin plot that was probably decided on by voting during an executive meeting. If you like tightening screws, prying open vents, opening valves, closing valves, prying open locks, and warming by a heat radiator - but exactly when you are told to do so, then this game is your thing. It's also heavily consolised, with simplistic QTE to add to the jumpscares. If you get off on Scottish swear words, you will be in heaven. Otherwise, stay away. Maybe when the discount is high enough, aye? And only if you are good with "lekky", whatever that shait might be...

I really wanted to like this game. It started out pretty strong, but then became Generic Horror Simulator on an Oil Rig.

The story, as such, is that you're Cameron "Caz" McLearey an electrician on an oil rig due to any extremely poor decision. The manager disregards all expert advice to keep to this schedule and, while drilling, hits something. You spend the rest of the game running all around the oil rig (I hope you especially like Engineering and Accomodation because it feels like a solid 1/3 of the game takes place there.

Unfortunately the creatures are non-threatening and feel more like an annoying hinderence than actual threats. The "puzzles" also become extremely repetitive. Honestly, I think a game about trying to survive a disaster on an oil rig could be a very interesting game, but the supernatural horror elements detract from it. The game starts becoming a game of "guess how the developers are going to prevent you from advancing this time" especially close to the end of the game.

The controls can get frustrating at times, requiring you to be in exactly the right position to climb or interrupting you with a cutscene that ended up spinning me around and killing me...which led to a crash when I restarted. Luckily the previous checkpoint was right before it happened.

The game is also obsessed with flooding the oil rig with water, even though they end up flooding spaces and compartments on the top(!) of the oil rig that should be leaking out due to the structure being unable to maintain water-tight integrity. As someone who spent years on ships, it felt very disappointing that they kept adding water where they pleased without considering the actual effects it would have which pulled me out of the game.

Every character is actually pretty flat with only one or two characteristics to identify them. For a game that relies heavily on characterization and story, especially since the gameplay barely exists, it's extremely disappointing. It's also especially irritating that one character that's supposed to be your best friend onboard is completely incompetent and dies, completely foreseen, due to poor decisions that you saw at your second meeting with him.

Do you wonder about the eldritch horror that exists? Where it came from, what the goal is, or anything? Do you want to know more about the oil rig operations? Whose on it and all the issues that cause the workers to feel it's death trap? Too bad! You'll take the tiny morsels they drop once or twice and be satisifed.

Do you have questions about what happens after the end of the game? Too bad. Nothing is explained, implied, and you know as little at the start of the game as the end.

The voice acting is really good, but feels wasted on this game.

I bought this game on sale and I can in good conscious only recommend buying it on sale, if you're interested.

If you're interested in a different water-based horror game I'd recommend Soma over this anyday.

I mulled over this a bit and feel like I need to point out somethings:

The visual and audio design are extremely good. Until the flooding everywhere near the end, I never doubted I was on an oil rig in the Northern Sea. The water looks good and it's nice to see the shine from oil and other contaminants in the water, but all the cables look pretty bad.

My " voice acting is wasted" is too negative; the voice acting is great and there are some great lines in the game; Rennick's, "Out here, I am King," Finley's breakdown, and Brodie's last radio transmission are outstanding.

While I wanted to know more about things, I suppose this game is mainly Caz's story and, now, we have to wait to see if there will be anything more to learn.

It's a decent game and I don't regret buying it, but to me recommendations are "would I choose this for someone looking for this genre", my answer is still no.]
