The game does have some methods of shortening the distances, but ... you do have to build those as you go along. You can build rail networks to carry you over long distances, you can also eventually build portals.
Overall though ... the scale and scope of the game are part of what I love about it. That said, I am an Explorer type gamer, and many games tend not to be aimed at Explorers.
What types of games to you tend to prefer?
Terraria did that right a long time ago and I still stand by their method: offer a small, medium and large world sizes at generation.
