Can't open a cracked egg after putting it in a chest

I took a cracked egg out of an incubator and put it in a chest for my friend to open to get her pet. Except that when she took it out of the chest, the "use item" button wouldn't work on it. I tried to open it, no luck. Same with taking it to another world and trying it with a different character. It just won't open, period. I am going to try to reproduce the bug, but is this something anyone else has encountered?

I have had this happen once after incubating 72 eggs in one batch and storing them. 1 bugged out and could not be opened. Dunno how/why it happened. Fortunately it was only 1 egg out of 500+ total that I hatched and stored. I always made a batch of 72-144 and then I'd open them all in one go. So it appears to be a rare occurance.

What use item button? Can't you just take it into the hand and use it that way? Same way as you would eat something or use your pickaxe?

That's what I meant by "use item button". I was using the terminology that the wiki uses to be clear, although I can see where the confusion comes in with my use of the word "button". Sorry for the confusion!
