The map displays your in-game map. So the only way to extend it is by actually exploring the area.

I constantly get off track when I alt tab between the map tool that shows the rings and the game. Hard to hit an invisible ring on an increasingly different map, since you keep opening more and more.
You can tell the map tool to "monitor map" and it will update the image every minute or so, but that's not very useful unless you have a second screen.
There aren't a ton of mods available for the game yet, but I'd keep an eye on the database: https://core-keeper.thunderstore.io/package/ someone might come up with a mod that displays distance at some point.
