Then there's also the fact you can craft bridges from different materials. Use them for aesthetic reasons etc.
And wood bridges are cheap to make once you get a farm going. You'll likely want several thousand of them for the ocean biome (if you were too lazy to craft a boat) and/or the final biome (mining walls takes too long).
Blocks are a limited resource, always. (You can't craft them, only 1:1 them)
Bridges are an unlimited resource. (Grow wood, craft bridges, place)
