Mage is okay sofar could also use 1-2 more staffs.
But Summons are really mid my friend does 2k with his melee attack meanwhile my skeletons do 250~ish dmg
I suspect a lot of the dissing of summoning comes from the majority of combat in the game being against 1-2 regular enemies. in those situations it's not worth summoning anymore anymore than your mana bar's worth if at all. where summoning truly shines though is against huge hordes of enemies and bosses.
normally with a ranged build you're probably going to be dodging stuff anyways between shots why not use that dodge time to summon some bat minions. with the right armors you can field five at a time each putting out about 150 damage each and this damage is free of charge and you can keep using your musket to supplement this.
I've wiped out entire armies of high level enemies this way and even almost defeated one of the harder endgame bosses in addtion to shredding a midgame boss I found without even trying.
Mage at least has a powerful endgame build, even if it is pidgeonholed into arcane staff mana on crit.
summons just seem like they're much better being used as a supplemental free dps on a ranged build during boss fights instead of an actual thing you build as your primary damage type.
idk whats the 3rd one but the bats and skeletons barely even attack enough to lvl up
imo
remove the minion lifespan, make it like terraria they are just permanent there with you until you die or despawn them.
add more minions and make it + magic more viable
cuz theres not a lot of magic weapons too unless we just been unlucky and never found a lot
guess in these games range n melee ends up being the best choice overall (Same in terraria tbh) cuz magic being just wahtever damage and mana capped is just nonsense
