1.1 will need to do something about warlock/summoner progression.
biggest issue with the 1.0 release (besides a few bugs like invincible clay burrower worms and music doors not opening until you exit and rejoin the world) has been the absolutely abysmal launch state of warlock.

it is very obvious that the class was just slapped together at the last minute so they could add two new classes for 1.0 instead of only mage.
there are only THREE summoner weapons, the first of which (the bat) is the only viable one because skeletons are slow melee units and jellyfish are just a goofy rotary mage weapon that does summon damage for some reason. also minions have such short lifespan and just high mana costs if upgraded the're a massive pain to use.
Summoner needs it's weapon count at least tripled throughout progression.

Mage has much less extreme issues, it certainly has less available weapons than melee/ranged but there are a lot more than warlock. biggest problem mage has is that mana costs scale with upgraded weapons too fast, while ranged does just as good of a job as mage without a mana system at all.
And before anyone says anything yes it's possible to make mage good, and it's only by using the arcane staff and enough mana on crit to get basically infinite mana and turn it into a copy of the ranged class.

There are classes? Or do you just mean swap gear and weapon = class change? Been playing for 14 hours and never had any option for a class, I'm only at Ghorm tho

When you create a character, you can pick a class (Background). It provides you with a basic weapon/tool and 3 skill points in relevant category.

100% agree with the OP...Hopefully the devs listen and make the needed changes and additions.

totally agree with you summon needs like 3-5 other staffs.
Mage is okay sofar could also use 1-2 more staffs.
But Summons are really mid my friend does 2k with his melee attack meanwhile my skeletons do 250~ish dmg

I do generally agree with you that mage and warlock stuff needs more tuning and rebalancing but you can make summoning worth the effort to supplement a ranged combat build aka the gun the only useful ranged weapon.

I suspect a lot of the dissing of summoning comes from the majority of combat in the game being against 1-2 regular enemies. in those situations it's not worth summoning anymore anymore than your mana bar's worth if at all. where summoning truly shines though is against huge hordes of enemies and bosses.

normally with a ranged build you're probably going to be dodging stuff anyways between shots why not use that dodge time to summon some bat minions. with the right armors you can field five at a time each putting out about 150 damage each and this damage is free of charge and you can keep using your musket to supplement this.

I've wiped out entire armies of high level enemies this way and even almost defeated one of the harder endgame bosses in addtion to shredding a midgame boss I found without even trying.

Mage at least has a powerful endgame build, even if it is pidgeonholed into arcane staff mana on crit.

summons just seem like they're much better being used as a supplemental free dps on a ranged build during boss fights instead of an actual thing you build as your primary damage type.

I mean at that point, are you even a summoner anymore? It sounds more like you're a range build with the bonus of summons. You would probably do just as well if not more going a pure range build. Why even bother with a summoner build then? Anyone who has tried with an actual summoner build can see how poorly done summons are done.

Summoner has more minion specific equipment and armor sets than it does options for summons, which is truly baffling. I think a really cool path to go down would be to make summoners actually have to capture and bind the more basic enemies into a spell book which you would then use as your summon
Razzle 3 września 2024 o 15:21
ngl 3 minion types in total is very low :\ it just makes it pointless why even have a skill tree for it
idk whats the 3rd one but the bats and skeletons barely even attack enough to lvl up

imo

remove the minion lifespan, make it like terraria they are just permanent there with you until you die or despawn them.
add more minions and make it + magic more viable

cuz theres not a lot of magic weapons too unless we just been unlucky and never found a lot

guess in these games range n melee ends up being the best choice overall (Same in terraria tbh) cuz magic being just wahtever damage and mana capped is just nonsense
