Multiplayer not working?

Me and a friend have been trying to connect to each others games but when they try, their game freezes up and when I try my game says that it can't find the game. we checked and unchecked various options and I even checked my firewall but nothing is working. are we missing something? we'ere both on PC and both using steam. Can anyone help?

I had similar problems with my friends. We dont use room codes, instead we use invites - for some reason only invites sent from steam overlay from game window work properly, and one of us uses VPN.
