Godly DPS Build (Mage/Summoner)
I wanted to share this build, since it melts every boss in the game.

Talents required:

Tier 3 Running (15% increased damage)
Tier 2 Vitality (10% increased damage)
Maxed Ranged (10% Ranged AS, 20% Ranged Damage, 10% chance for 100% Crit Chance, 40% Crit Damage)
Maxed Magic (5% Crit Chance, 10% Mana Recovered on Crit, 50% of MB added to damage, 50% Magic Damage on Crit)
Tier 3 Gardening (25% Crit Damage)
Maxed Fishing (15% Damage to Bosses after eating Fish)
Tier 3 Food (20% Damage)
Maxed Summoning (+75 MB per Minion, +10% Magic Damage per Minion, 10% Ranged Attack Speed per Minion)

Total Stats from Talents: +190% Damage, +65% Crit Damage, +375 MB, +5% Crit Chance, +60% AS, +15% Damage to Bosses.

Items Required:

Grim Armor Set (Reinforced): +4 Max Minions, +79 MB, +9% Magic Damage, +67 Mana.
Morpha Ring: +49% Crit Damage
Polished Golden Spike Ring: +9% Crit Chance, +29% Crit Damage
Glass Bead Necklace: +82% Crit Damage
Concealed Blade: +12% Crit Chance
Scholar Satchel: +29 Mana, +18% Magic Damage
Soul Lantern

Pet Required:

Owlux: Crit Damage > Crit Chance > Ranged Attack Speed > Triple Damage (50% Crit Damage is ideal)

Weapons Required:

Arcane Staff (+15% Crit Chance)
Tome of the Dark (level 2)

Food Required:

Golden Sunrice (+43% Magic Damage, +49 MB)
Brown Dune Tail (+13.9% Ranged Attack Speed)
Golden Puffungi (+14% Damage to Bosses)
Litho Trilobite (+69 Mana)
Elder Dragonfish (+14% Crit Chance)
Verdant Dragonfish (+41% Crit Damage)
Tornis Kingfish (+50% Damage)

Golden Lunacorn (Minions Stuff)

Let's calculate our DPS, shall we?

Arcane Staff does 135−163, at 3.33 Casts per Second (9 mana per cast)

We get 73.9% Attack Speed, so we have 5.79 Casts per Second.

We have 503 Magic Barrier, which Half of it gives us Magic Damage. Thus, we get 251 Damage. Now our damage is 386 - 414.

We also have +316.5% Damage, so 1607 - 1724 damage.

We also have a natural 60% Critical Chance, with a 10% chance to proc 100% Crit Chance for 3 Seconds for every hit. Technically speaking, this buff will be up most of the fight.

We also have +266% Critical Damage (316% with Pet).

This means we Crit for 7488 - 8033 damage. With 5.79 Casts per Second, we have 44,933 DPS during Crit Proc and 26,960 when it's not.

We also have 5 level 2 Bats, each hitting for 21.7 DPS. With all the damage buffs and minion stuff, it adds to around 100 DPS per Bat. So an extra 500 DPS.

I didn't bother adding the battle potions, because their duration is so low.

The strongest boss in the game is the Core Commander, which has 698078 HP.

This means we can down him in less than 15 seconds! (we have +Boss Damage).

Also, we have over 200 mana, so our mana will always be full, thanks to the 10% of Max Mana every Crit. Anyway, this is the strongest and safest build I was able to make. Enjoy!

So you mention Tome of the Dark at level 2, is there a point in not upgrading it? The only reason I can think of is for the lower mana cost?

Sweet lunacorn. I hate Arcane staff from the deepest of my flintlock barrel.

Jeez, I need better way to come up with better number / dps as ranger ; w ;

literally saw someone in discord say melee was better than mage, I tried mage and will never look back

im playing a mage/ranged. super early in the game (restarted world) and so i use a bow when i run out of mana, and it slaps pretty well
not sure if anything else is better but definitely not minions at this level. thats what i rolled on my first character and i kinda hate it. takes so long for the minions to start doing anything.
vs bosses they're good passive damage but vs anything else you're faster to just kill them yourself

build a moat, fences, use spike traps on bridges and surround your base with the ground tiles that spawn enemies for a constant source of items and xp, one of my favorite things about this game.

That's a good build I ran something similar but with a better all around food. But you can't take Commander down in 15 seconds. You can't skip his phase transitions and sometimes, he will cast his AoE thing right away, thus, you'll have to wait a bit. I'd say you can kill him under a minute for sure and under 30 seconds most of the times, but not every single fight. Magic is really boosted right now.

P.S. I can't even take him under 15 seconds on my 260K-ish HP character using Rune Song.

There's no point. It hardly contributes to the DPS. So keeping it lvl 2 means you can get all 5 minions out with your mana.

Minions are OP because they give you massive buffs, not because of them being good.

50% Damage, 50% Attack Speed, 375 Magic Barrier ftw.

Replace the Concealed Blade for a Blue Leather Tome and a 2nd Morpha's Ring for the Polished Golden Spike Ring.
With appropriate Epic food (+crit, +crit dmg, +MB, +range atk speed, +dmg, etc) and 100% crit uptime you hit for 12k and 36k+ when getting triple dmg hits. Higher against bosses due to the +dmg vs bosses modifier.
Pretty neat.

edit: I prefer a Pearl Lantern over the Soul Lantern. The pets do such negligible dmg that I rather have ~9% movement speed and mana/sec than 50% minion haste.

I'm try to farm level with hive mother but it's still very slow

Build one of these. You can level up Summoning extremely fast if you have the jellyfish summon. Like level 100 in around an hour or so starting from 0.

Wording correctly: character skills are OP

I found extra movement speed above what you get from skills and a golden pepper meal (~150%) to not be that great anymore and mana reg bonus does not work correctly, so I would value both lanterns as pretty much not doing much of anything, though the movement speed still does a little bit more than nothing at least.
