Starting the game results in a black screen and then self-closing.
I haven't played this game in years, years. There wasn't a lot of content back then and I don't know about it now. For reference, we're talking... the very first Easter update? Or what ever it was, when ever that was.

I see there's a "1.0 is out!" thing on my Steam announcement feed, decide "Alright, I'll give it another go since it's been so long," give it a fresh reinstall, launch it... black screen, and then it closes itself out. So I try it again a couple more times, same deal. ...So I try it with the "no mods" option, which why would I need that when even back at that point in time, mods weren't a thing? And surprise, surprise, same exact deal.

What the hell? I've given the game a clean reinstall, I've verified the files now, ran it as an administrator, tried different compatibility modes and nothing. I've looked through the discussion forum (because of course there's no bug report sub-forum, why would there be?) and the last similar thing I found was dated all the way back in February of this year... and the times after that, two more years prior.

So I have to ask again: what the hell? What's the deal with this?

I had the same scenario and issue: long time of not playing the game, not sure if I ever uninstalled it while it was updating through. Game launched to black screen, then crashed.
Instead of posting rants about it I did some debugging:

Tried the following:
  • Running as Admin
  • Turning off cloud saves and deleting all user files in AppData
  • Updating Windows and Nvidia Drivers
  • Verifying files via steam, reinstalling from scratch

None worked,so I submitted a bug report. On a hunch, I tried something else and found a solution:
  1. Open game's local files
  2. Delete folder labeled "BepInEx" (common modding plugin for Unity engine games)
  3. Launch as normal (with or without mods, doesn't seem to matter)

Game seems to be running fine now for me, but I haven't tested with any mods. Not sure if mods will work given that I deleted the modding plugin

So, i tried to go %appdata%/LocalLow then delete Pugstorm folder (core keeper), Then the game can launch now.

It seems the old files are not compatible whatsoever with 1.0

maybe deleting just the prefs.json wouldve been enough

I've tried all of the above (save for deleting the "BepInEx" folder, since it doesn't even exist at all...), and haven't gotten anything to work still. Even went checking around in my r2modman installation since I sometimes use mods when playing Risk of Rain 2, just to be safe, and found absolutely nothing there either.

Yeah, I've tried this too, and no dice still.

No "prefs.json" anywhere around, chief.

you deleted it when you deleted the Pugstorm folder i guess
if the game creates a new pugstorm folder at "LocalLow" look inside there should be a Player.log at "Core Keeper" folder maybe there is a error listed
