Fishing Power

Does anyone know what Fishing Power does? The only information I could find around Fishing Power is that a certain amount of Fishing Power is required to be able to fish in certain zones. However, with there being fishing armor, rings, necklaces that increase your fishing power significantly higher than what is required to fish in a zone, I suspect fishing power does something else.

Does more fishing power increase how fast a fish is attracted to your line? Does it increase the change of getting fish over non-fish items? Does it increase the chance of rarer fish? Etc.

The only other thing I could think of that could possibly be the reason there is so much gear that directly increases Fishing Power is because some gear/talents take a % of your fishing power and turn it into Ranged Damage.

There used to be a fishing mini-game. I'd guess it was used in that somehow. Otherwise, it feels like it speeds up biting speed but it's only really noticeable in low level areas.

There are some fishing power requirements for different areas, but it also increases how fast things bite. If you want to minmax fishing I suggest you use one of the loadout slots for pure fishing gear. The fishing set parts are fished out of different biomes and it has nice bonuses. Fish are a good source of nice buffs throughout all game, especially in later stages. What affects the catch however are your bait and talents, and also there is a chance to catch double fiah instead of one in some items.

I don't think fishing power effects hook faster speed. But I could be wrong. Anyone looking to the grind the skill up really outta farm those goldfish rings though. They let you power level the skill to 100 in just 2 or so hours.

The rest of the set is only really necessary if you want to fish up a lot of Tornis Kingfish for the 60% damage food buff.

Pretty much just the same way terraria handles fishing power.

Higher modifier = amount of areas you can fish in, bite speed and I'd assume rarity?
I swear I'm getting more rare catches as I level it.

Right now, the more Fishing Power you have, the faster fish bites the bait.

you want to level up the fishing set as much as you can and get an extra ring for fishing power. the late game fish, especially the crystal biome and lava fish are super usefull and you can fish up armour too

According to the wikis the only thing it does is affect what areas you can fish in, there's no point raising it past a certain point or after you have a high tier enough rod. There are separate stats and items to affect how fast fish bite so I suspect people are just experiencing placebo if they think Fishing Power affects that. There are some parts of the 5 piece fishing gear set which affect fishing power, which although basically useless, is still useful for getting the set bonus which actually does do something.
You can affect bite speed, fish rarity, and so on with different bait and stats on armor.
I'm not sure why people think Fishing Power is linked to bite speed, there's no public proof of it. I have Fishing level 100, for the record, I don't think stuff bites any faster than early game unless I put on my special fishing gear and other buffs. The first skill in the Fishing tree does increase bite speed, but aside from that (so first 25 levels) your level/power shouldn't make a big difference.

That's what I thought too. But fishing power does seem to influence bite speed even if the wiki doesn't say so.

might be worth just checking with and without the bite speed stuff. but when i fish with my fishing power gear and when i dont is like night and day

use the fishing set plus a 2nd ring of the same set. it doesnt get any better than that and the double fish effect is very good. stack with kelp dumpling and you get double fish like 50% the time.

you can make fishing holes for every water type in your base aside normal water for clay/ruins/wilderness/desert. for these you need to visit the biome. but only desert fish is really needed for the good food (kingfish mainly as that dmg buff is unbeatable)

i assume hes asking if its worth upgrading fishing power gear or if its a waste of resources

It literally tells you what it does in the description for your stats in game:
"A higher fishing allows catching fish in higher level areas while also reducing the time for fish to bite in lower level areas."
