what tier of tool do i need to break a portal?

Ive got a portal near my base, and id like to move it to one of the outer biomes for fast travel. I have the sunite(? the red ore) tier of pick atm, upgraded once.

Do you mean the portal you build by your self or the map generated which is alway near an boss? I don't think you can move thoses.

I didn't know you could build portals. I had a portal spawn a short distance from my base, like 2 screens over. I read somewhere you could move them, so i assumed you could bust it, and place it somewhere else

You need to deal at least 851 mining damage to break it and pick up. The fastest way to do that would be using stationary drill (they can break pretty much anything) or some explosives.
